01 What the evidence supports
The strongest, most consistent finding is that portable HEPA air cleaners lower the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the rooms where they run.
PM2.5 in children's sleeping areas, versus control homes, in a randomized trial of families living near agricultural operations (95% CI: 41–72%). Living areas were 42% lower (95% CI: 19–58%).

Why we care about PM2.5 specifically
Fine particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs. They are one of the indoor exposures most consistently linked to respiratory irritation, and they are the pollutant portable air cleaners are actually rated to remove.
The EPA is direct that filtration is a supplement, not a solution: air cleaners “can reduce indoor air pollution; however, they cannot remove all pollutants from the air,” and the most effective steps remain removing the source of the pollution and ventilating with clean outdoor air.
02 What the evidence does not yet show
This is the part most air purifier marketing leaves out, so we are putting it first among the caveats.
The same trial did not find a significant improvement in asthma control
In the HAPI trial, 75 children aged 6–12 with poorly controlled asthma were randomized to asthma education alone or education plus HEPA cleaners. The primary outcome — change in Asthma Control Test score — was 10% better in the HEPA group, but the confidence interval crossed zero (95% CI: −12 to 39%). It did not reach statistical significance.
Secondary analyses were more encouraging: children with HEPA cleaners were less likely to hit the cutoff for poorly controlled asthma, less likely to report symptoms in the prior two weeks, and had lower risk of unplanned clinical visits. Those are secondary findings, and should be treated as such.
The wider literature is thin
Systematic reviews of indoor environmental interventions for childhood asthma repeatedly reach the same verdict: the studies are sparse, often small, frequently unblinded, and firm clinical recommendations cannot yet be derived from them. Air filtration shows promise. It is not settled.
03 Why we will not install ozone generators
Some devices marketed as air purifiers work by generating ozone. We do not use them, and the federal position is unambiguous.
Ozone is a respiratory irritant, and ineffective at safe levels
The EPA states that ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation, may worsen chronic respiratory disease such as asthma, and can compromise the body's ability to fight respiratory infection. At concentrations that stay within public health standards, it has little ability to remove indoor contaminants — and its reactions can produce irritants such as formaldehyde and formic acid.
The EPA further notes that no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces.
For a household that already includes someone with asthma, this is precisely the wrong trade.
04 The limits of what we install
An air cleaner in a bedroom is a narrow intervention. Here is what it does not fix.
It does not capture large allergens well
The EPA notes that most portable air cleaners on the market do not have a high enough clean air delivery rate to effectively remove larger particles such as pollen, dust mite and cockroach allergen — partly because those particles settle out of the air quickly and are re-suspended from surfaces rather than staying airborne.
It is not rated for gases or odors
The clean air delivery rate rating system covers particles only. There is no widely used performance rating for devices claiming to remove gases.
It only cleans the air where it runs
A unit in a bedroom does not treat the rest of the home, and it only works while it is powered on with a maintained filter. This is why we place units in sleeping areas — the room where a child spends the most consecutive hours.
